FREE membership for the foodservice industry? Yes, actually...

Over its 80+ year history, FPI's primary members have been foodservice packaging converters. Back in the late 1970s, we started inviting our members' suppliers to join the association. The next big membership expansion came about 10 years ago, when FPI made the decision to invite foodservice operators, distributors and group purchasing organization to join the organization for free. Why did we do that?

In looking back at the proposal that I drafted in 2001, I wrote:

We've learned that FPI is not well known outside our industry, and certainly not by the distributor and operator communities.  We also know that single-use foodservice packaging - while used by just about every foodservice operator - is often overlooked.

We already have the Affiliate membership category that any distributor or operator would fall under, if they chose to join FPI. To my knowledge, however, we've not targeted this group for membership, and maybe it's time that we did.  It would be a win-win-win for the association, the current members and the potential new members.  How?

For FPI and its members, it would help raise awareness of the importance of single-use foodservice packaging with their customers. For the potential members, it would give them the opportunity to learn more about an industry for which they are responsible. For all, it would open the lines of communication and provide terrific networking opportunities (which, we know, is one of our strengths). Plus, if we were successful in gaining affiliate members, we might have a better chance with non-member converting companies.

Indeed, we moved forward with the idea, and today we have over 100 companies taking advantage of the free membership (click here to see a list of all our members).

Not one to rest on our laurels, we recently sent a communication to our Board asking for help recruiting even more affiliate members. But, hey, let's see if we can recruit via this blog, too!

If you work for a foodservice operator, distributor or group purchasing organization in North America and have responsibilities for foodservice packaging, we hope you will consider joining FPI for free! The benefits of FPI's Affiliate Membership include:
