We here at FPI love foodservice packaging. Really. We do. And, every other year, we get the opportunity to highlight foodservice packaging in a very significant way through our co-branded awards program with QSR magazine. This makes us pretty darn happy.
2015 marks the 8th time we have gotten together with our friends over at QSR to host the foodservice packaging awards. This year, we announced our awards program at the start of summer, publicizing our want for innovative entries in the categories of brand delivery, convenience, performance, sustainability and “wow” factor. By our July 31 deadline, we had 108 entries from as far away as Poland!
Our judging process, like our last go around in 2013, was a fun and fascinating thing to observe. It’s a hands-on and dialogue based process and one of my very favorite things I’ve gotten to witness at FPI. Not kidding. Our judges narrowed down the pantheon of products to a maximum of three in each category. They also selected a “foodservice package of the year” from among the winners of those categories.
Finalists were notified and, after a long, three month wait, the winners were announced last week at FPI’s fall conference in St. Louis, Missouri.
Now that all of our awards safely resting in the hands of our winners, it’s time to reflect a little bit. So, what did we learn?
Well, this year, it was definitely about brand delivery. This was our most popular category for 2015. Brand delivery also resonated with our judges, who awarded our top honor, the foodservice package of the year, to the design firm behind Culver’s “Family Farm Fresh” take out bags and cups. The judges’ comments on our foodservice package of the year and our other first place winners are highlighted in QSR’s article.
While our awards program is always a lot of work behind the scenes, we want to keep offering this opportunity to allow the foodservice packaging industry to shine. It also takes a lot of work behind the scenes to create innovative foodservice packaging! While we know the importance of packaging, we know that it is only one of the many things the foodservice industry considers. We hope shining a spotlight on some of our gems helps highlight the innovations our industry is constantly producing for its customers.
And, of course our awards wouldn’t be what they are without our co-host. Big thanks to QSR magazine for taking this project on with us and showcasing our award winners in the magazine, both in print and online.
Congratulations to all of our award winners this year, and stay tuned for our next awards program in 2017. We always hope our next iteration is bigger and better than the last, with maybe even a surprise or two thrown in for good measure. Which leads me to an ask of our readers and friends: we’re thinking about maybe shaking things up with a new category or two. Do you have any suggestions? Shoot me a message if you do. We’d love to hear from you.
