Two Public Health Organizations Win 2017 Crumbine Award

Released 7/6/2017

Boulder County Public Health in Colorado and Kansas City, Missouri Health Department have both been selected as the winners of the 2017 Samuel J. Crumbine Consumer Protection Award for Excellence in Food Protection.

"This award signifies Kansas City, Missouri Health Department's dedication to food safety and serves as a platform for encouragement to continuous commitment in providing services to our citizens and visitors," said Rex D. Archer, M.D., M.P.H., director of health at the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department. "We are honored to be chosen as a recipient of the Samuel J. Crumbine Award."

Since 1955, a local public health unit has received the Samuel J. Crumbine Consumer Protection Award by a jury of leading environmental health officials and public health sanitarians. Named for one of the most renowned public health sanitarians in the United States, this award is the most prestigious recognition that a public health unit can receive. Crumbine winners serve as models of excellence for other public health and safety programs across the nation, offering best practices to advance food protection programs.

"We are thrilled and honored to receive the 2017 Crumbine Award. This is a wonderful acknowledgment of the work our program has done to protect the health of our community," said Lane Drager, consumer protection program coordinator at Boulder County Public Health. "We are also grateful for the hard work and partnership of our local restaurants to make changes to improve their food safety practices."

They join past recipients that include Wake County Environmental Services in North Carolina; Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department in Nebraska; Hamilton County Public Health in Ohio; and Salt Lake Valley in Utah, among others.

The Crumbine Award will be presented to the two health jurisdictions at the Annual Educational Conference of the National Environmental Health Association, July 10 13 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Presentations will also be made at the annual meetings of the International Association for Food Protection, July 9 12 in Tampa, Florida, and National Association of County and City Health Officials, July 11 13 in Pittsburgh.

The Crumbine Award is supported by the Conference for Food Protection, in cooperation with the American Academy of Sanitarians, American Public Health Association, Association of Food and Drug Officials, Food Marketing Institute, Foodservice Packaging Institute, International Association for Food Protection, National Association of County and City Health Officials, National Environmental Health Association and National Sanitation Foundation International.
