FALLS CHURCH, VA –
(May 10, 2010) For the fifth time in its 54-year history, a jury of leading
environmental health officials and public health sanitarians has decided not to
select a recipient for the 2010 Samuel J. Crumbine Consumer Protection Award.
The Crumbine Award,
named for one of the most renowned public health sanitarians, is usually
presented each year to a local public health unit that demonstrates excellence
in food protection. Crumbine winners serve as models for other public health
and safety programs across the nation. Among environmental and public health
circles, the Crumbine Award is the most prestigious recognition that a public
health unit can receive.
“The jury was faced
with a very difficult decision this year,” said Val Siebal, 2010 chair of the
Crumbine Jury and Director of the Environmental Management Department,
Sacramento County, winner of the 2008 award. “We only received two applications
this year and felt that while both programs were extremely good, they did not
meet or exceed all four key criteria required of a Crumbine Award winner. We concluded
that the integrity of the award would be better served if no recipient was
chosen this year.” Siebal went on to explain that applications are not judged
against each other but against the criteria.
The Crumbine Award
is supported by the Conference for Food Protection, in cooperation with the
American Academy of Sanitarians, American Public Health Association,
Association of Food & Drug Officials, Foodservice & Packaging Institute
Inc., International Association for Food Protection, National Association of
County and City Health Officials, National Environmental Health Association, National
Restaurant Association Solutions, National Sanitation Foundation International
and Underwriters Laboratories Inc.
